Individual Artists > Creative Capital Professional Development Program

Individual Artists Professional Development Program
Funded by Miami-Dade County, this intensive program provides professional consulting through the Creative Capital Foundation of New York and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts New York (VLA NY) to help individual artists of all disciplines achieve personally established goals for their professional development. The annual retreat provides a cohesive structure in which diverse communities of artists who originate work can pursue innovative approaches and benefit from expert coaching in techniques to organize, plan and sustain their creative careers. For FY 2011, the Professional Development Program curriculum is focusing on legal and business issues for artists including intellectual property basics and contract & negotiating essentials as well as cutting-edge strategies for maximizing the spectrum of opportunities enabled by the internet.

Advanced Internet for Artists:
Goal Setting-Defining concrete and measurable goals is the heart of all Creative Capital workshops. It is vital that participants take the time to create a thoughtful plan of action for employing web-based strategies to communicate about their work. The Goal Setting sessions that happen throughout the weekend workshop will assist in defining and refining goals, creating a roadmap for success after the workshop is complete. Lecture and Demo: Content Management Systems-This lecture and demonstration provides the conceptual overview of how a content management system (CMS) works and how a CMS gives the user complete control over content and form of a website. These sessions focus on using Wordpress, the CMS that Creative Capital recommends for artists to use. Information covered includes finding a host, installing Wordpress on your server, testing out different themes and organizing data on your site. Breakout: Web Site Review -Conducted in small groups, workshop leaders will outline best practices, share outstanding examples and review the essential elements you need to make your website a success. They will work with each participant to review your website, followed by group feedback.  These workshops will be led by Creative Capital Foundation, NY.

Legal & Business Issues for Arts Professionals:
An interactive workshop about the major legal and business issues that affect the artistic and creative endeavors of individual artists and arts professionals within organizations and cultural institutions. Topics addressed will include intellectual property (copyright, trademark and rights of privacy/publicity); contract essentials for agreements with creative partners, managers, employees, independent contractors, vendors, clients, etc., and negotiation skills; and choosing and forming the right business vehicle for artistic and creative endeavors, including a look at nonprofit and for profit models as well as financing from fiscal sponsorship to crowd-funding. To customize the experience and address discipline specific matters, attendees will be invited to provide information about their work, professional organizations and their goals in attending to the presenter in advance. Attendees will also be able to ask questions throughout the program and the presenter will make herself available for a follow-up consultation to attendees.   This workshop will be led by Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, NY.
